▶안녕하세요? 자기소개 부탁드립니다.
제 이름은 강병융입니다. 저는 서울에서 태어났습니다. 서울과 모스크바에서 문학 공부를 했고, 현재는 유럽의 슬로베니아 류블랴나 대학교 아시아학과에서 일하고 있습니다. 아시아학과에는 한국학, 일본학, 중국학 세 가지 전공이 있는데, 저는 한국 문학을 주로 가르치고 있습니다. 여기서 슬로베니아 학생들뿐만 아니라, 크로아티아, 세르비아, 이탈리아 등 다양한 국적들의 학생들을 만나 함께 공부하고 있습니다. 현재는 한국학 전공 프로그램을 책임지는 역할을 하고 있습니다.
소설과 에세이를 쓰는 작가이기도 한데, 현재까지 10여권의 소설과 에세이를 발표했고, 브라질과 러시아에 번역 출간되기도 했습니다. 작년에는 세계 각국의 작가들이 모여 함께 토론하고 창작하는 미국 아이오와대학교 국제 창작프로그램에 참가하는 큰 영광을 누리기도 했습니다.
저는 문학을 전공하고 또 사랑하는 교수이자, 작가입니다.
▶슬로베니아 류블랴나 다소 생경한 곳인데, 어떤 곳인지 설명을 해주실 수 있을까요?
슬로베니아는 중유럽의 작은 나라입니다. EU 회원국이자, 유로화를 통화로 씁니다. 류블랴나는 이 나라의 수도입니다. 슬로베니아는 이탈리아, 오스트리아, 헝가리, 크로아티아와 국경을 맞대고 있습니다. 인구가 2백만 정도밖에 살지 않는 작은 나라이지만, 자연이 아름답고, 사람들도 아름다운 살기 좋은 나라입니다. 수도 류블랴나는 슬로베니아의 한가운데 위치했고, 인구는 30만 명이 되지 않습니다. 그리고 이 도시에 있는 국립대학이 제가 근무하고 있는 류블랴나 대학교입니다.
▶슬로베니아에도 한국학이 있다는 것이 흥미롭습니다. 류블랴나 대학교의 한국학에 관해서 설명해주실 수 있나요?
말씀드린 바와 같이, 류블랴나 대학교는 류블랴나에 있습니다. 국립대학으로 이 나라의 최고 대학입니다. 학생 수는 4만 명에 이르고, 교원 6천 명 정도 있습니다. 26개의 단과 대학이 있습니다.
한국학 전공은 인문대학 아시아학과에 소속되어 있습니다. 한국 경제의 성장과 한국 문화의 인기에 힘입어 한국학 전공은 인문대학에서 가장 인기가 높습니다. 한국학 전공 학생은 총 30명입니다. 한국어뿐만 아니라, 문학, 문화, 역사 등 다양한 과목을 공부하고 있습니다.
5년 안에 석사 과정을 개설하는 것을 목표로 열심히 뛰고 있습니다.
▶작가라고도 하셨는데, 어떤 작품을 쓰시고, 최근에 발표하신 작품이 있으면 말씀해 주실 수 있나요?
저는 주로 산문, 특히 소설과 에세이를 많이 씁니다. 아직은 문학 세계라고 말할 것은 없지만, 주로 외딴곳에서 나를 찾는 이야기에 관심이 많은 것 같습니다.
최근에는 목포문학박람회 이벤트의 일환으로 다른 작가님들과 함께 목포를 소재로 단편 소설을 써서 앤솔로지 <소설 목포> 수록한 바가 있습니다. 여기에 나오는 주인공 역시 외딴곳에서 살다가 외딴 곳에 가서 누군가를 만나는 이야기입니다. 이것은 아마도 제가 비교적 외딴곳에 살고 있기 때문이 아닌가 싶습니다.
▶교수로서는 어떤 분야를 연구하고 계신가요?
몇 년 전부터 외딴곳으로 떠난 사람들, 그들의 이야기에 관심을 두고 있습니다. 그래서 디아스포라 문학을 연구하기 시작했습니다. 현재는 한국학중앙연구원의 지원으로 한민족 디아스포라 연구 프로젝트를 수행하고 있습니다. 2027년까지 이 프로젝트를 수행하면서 세계 각국의 디아스포라 문학을 만나고 싶습니다. 요즘 가장 관심 있는 작가는 차학경과 이윤하입니다.
▶향후, 작가로서, 교수로서 계획을 공유해 주실 수 있을까요?
작가로서는 내년에 소설집, 에세이집, 슬로베니아 대표 시인 토마시 샬라문의 번역 시선집을 펴낼 예정입니다. 이렇게 꾸준히 독자들을 만나는 것이 제 계획입니다.
교수로서는 아직 발굴되지 않는 한민족 디아스포라 문학가들을 발굴하는 일을 하면서 류블랴나 대학의 한국학이 더욱 발전할 수 있도록 최선을 다하려고 합니다. 우선, 5년 안으로 한국학 석사 과정을 개설하는 것이 일차적인 목표입니다. 그리고 가능하다면, 류블랴나 뿐만 아니라 다른 도시에서도 슬로베니아 젊은이들이 한국학을 공부할 수 있는 기회를 만들고자 합니다. 더 나아가 류블랴나 대학이 중유럽의 한국학의 중추가 되도록 노력하겠습니다.

1. Please introduce yourself.
Greetings!
I am Byoung Young Kang, originally from Seoul, South Korea. My academic journey led me to study literature in both Seoul and Moscow. Presently, I hold a position at the Department of Asian Studies at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia, Europe.
Within the department, I focus on Korean Studies, one of the three majors alongside Japanese Studies and Chinese Studies. My main role involves teaching Korean literature to a diverse group of students, including those from Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, and Italy. Currently, I, as the chair, lead the Korean Studies major program.
Beyond academia, I am a passionate writer with around over ten published books of fiction and essays. My works have been translated and published in Brazil and Russia. Notably, I had the privilege of participating in the International Writing Programme at the University of Iowa, USA, where global writers gather to exchange ideas and create.
In essence, I am a writer, a professor, and an ardent lover of literature.
2. Ljubljana, Slovenia is somewhat unfamiliar to me. Can you tell me what it’s like?
Slovenia is a small country in Central Europe, a member of the European Union that uses the euro as its currency. Ljubljana is the country’s capital, situated at the heart of Slovenia, bordered by Italy, Austria, Hungary, and Croatia. Although it’s a small country with only about 2 million people, it’s a beautiful place to live, characterized by stunning nature and wonderful people. The capital city, Ljubljana, with a population of just under 300,000, serves as the centre of Slovenia, and the national university in the city is the University of Ljubljana, where I work.
3. It is intriguing that there's a Korean Studies program in Slovenia as well. Could you elaborate on Korean Studies at the University of Ljubljana?
As mentioned, the University of Ljubljana is situated in the capital, Ljubljana, and stands as the national pinnacle of education, boasting the title of the country’s premier university. The institution accommodates a substantial student body of 40,000 with around 6,000 faculty members across 26 colleges and universities.
The Korean Studies major is part of the Department of Asian Studies within the Faculty of Arts. Given the surge in the Korean economy and the widespread popularity of Korean culture, Korean Studies has become a sought-after major in the faculty. Currently, we have a total of 30 students majoring in Korean Studies. Alongside the Korean language, students delve into various subjects such as literature, culture, and history.
With an eye to the future, I am diligently working towards the goal of establishing a master’s program within the next five years.
4. You also mentioned being a writer. Can you share more about the type of work you write and if there’s a recent piece you've published?
Primarily, I focus on prose, particularly novels and essays. I haven’t fully established my literary world yet. I am particularly intrigued by individuals living in remote places.
Recently, as part of the Mokpo Literary Expo event, I collaborated with other writers to contribute a short story about Mokpo to the anthology <Fiction Mokpo>. The central character in this story also resides in a remote location and embarks on a journey to another distant place to meet someone. I believe this theme reflects my own experiences living in a relatively isolated setting.
5. What field are you researching as a professor?
For several years, my focus has been on individuals who have chosen to live in remote places and the narratives that emerge from their experiences. This interest led me to delve into diaspora literature. Currently, I am engaged in a Korean diaspora research project supported by the Academy of Korean Studies. Throughout this project, extending until 2027, I aim to explore Korean diaspora literature from various corners of the world.
Presently, the writers who captivate my attention the most are Theresa Hak Kyung Cha and Yoon Ha Lee.
6. Can you share your future plans as a writer and professor?
As a writer, my upcoming endeavours include publishing a collection of short stories, essays, and a compilation of translated poems by Slovenian representative poet Tomaž Šalamun next year. The goal is to consistently connect with readers through these works.
In my role as a professor, I am committed to advancing Korean studies at the University of Ljubljana. My primary objective is to establish a master's program in Korean studies within the next four years. I would like to find uncovering literary figures within the Korean diaspora who have yet to be discovered. Additionally, if feasible, I aspire to create opportunities for young Slovenians to study Korean studies not only in Ljubljana but also in other cities. Furthermore, I aim to position the University of Ljubljana as the central hub for Korean studies in Central Europe. Thank you.
